Google is internally working on a Linux project known as “Goobuntu” based on the popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution.  The company has confirmed that they are indeed working on this project but declined to offer further details.

Either this is just something Google engineers are working on it their spare time or it could indeed be something that they would want to market to the general public.  There will no doubt still be a lot of development work that is needed in order make it user friendly enough for consumers to use.  It does need to rival Windows XP’s ability.

But whatever happens at least the Ubuntu project will be benefiting from the extra work and bug fixes that Google provide.  So no one loses out!
