Iris Scan The Freehold Borough School District in New Jersey has is protecting their school kids with biometric access controls.  Thanks to a $369 000 federal grant the district has decided to implement 242-point-comparison iris scanning on it’s doors.

LG has supplied the hardware while HP has supplied IrisAccess software which together form a complete access-control system for the building.  Each student is allowed to nominate up to four other people who may access the building.  This will ensure that only vetted people gain access.

But if disgruntled Jonny has a bone to pick with his teachers and decides to go on a shooting spree he is already going to have access.  So what is this really helping then?

UPDATE: Jason, from the Freehold Borough, has commented in to explain it’s actual use. The system is meant to allow authorised individuals, such as the childrens parents, to enter the school and pick up the kids. And for that I think it would work quite well.

A picture of the actual setup is available here.

This is a great system to help out the school district! If this school had IrisAccess or not, “disgruntled Jonny” can get in the school if he wants or not! That has nothing to do with the IrisAccess. This system is focused on parents who will be picking up their children. This system will show who their child is, and if the have the authority to pick them up or not.
The regular system would be used if they aren’t registered in this system. If you are not registered in the system, you would ring a bell for the secretary to grant you access to the door. This system is available for parents if they want to take advantage.

    Hi Jason,

Yes now that you’ve explained the actual usage behind it I do understand it quite a bit better. Thanks for shedding light on this and I hoipe you guys benefit from this access control.

Don’t suppose you might have some pictures of the actual unit and it’s implementation?

Here is the office setup…. All of the equipment is labeled. Also, there is another Iris Camera on the outside to give access to the front door.
