It provides you with privacy against eavesdropping and message interception.  Your messages will be sent in an encrypted form over the network and will be stored on your phone in encrypted form as well.  To access the messages you will need to enter in your password.

Since both your message and contact list will be stored in an encrypted format you don’t need to worry about others being able to see with whom or what you’ve been corresponding.
