No one likes fumbling with keys and we would very much like to be able to see who’s at the door before opening. But trying to give your doors some intelligence before required extensive planning, changes and expense. Not anymore though as the Intelligent Door Handle is set to change the way things are done.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute have put loads of functionality including:

• Cameras
• Buzzers
• Keypads
• Motion detectors
• RFID
• Intercoms

All of this has been put into a door handle so all that you would need to kit out a new installation is to replace the door handle and lock. No more knocking down walls to install cabling. The only worry about these electronically controlled doors is what would happen if the power were to be out for an extended period of time or there was a fire? [via slashdot]
